Don't Waste Your Life.
“I will tell you what a tragedy is. I will show you how to waste your life. Consider a story in the February 1998 edition of the Reader’s Digest, which tells about a couple who ‘took early retirement from their jobs in the Northwest when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30 foot trawler, play softball, and collect...

Water your roots.
Kara and I planted some trees in our yard this summer. I felt so proud of myself…dug these fat holes in the super thick clay soil the builders so kindly provided us with. Took the time to throw some fertilizer down, break up the roots, and lower these bad boys into the ground. Boy do they look good in my yard! These are arborvitae trees. They are most commonly used to 1) provide a...

Transitions.
For the past 2 years (almost), I’ve been serving as the Student Ministries Pastor of Cross View Church. I never anticipated that the Lord would lead me into youth ministry, but I am honestly so glad that He did. It’s been such a good season of life, growth, and learning. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. In mid-June, I will be starting as the Worship Pastor at...

Battle Royale!
Ok, so maybe it’s a little silly. But Honestly…we’ve ALL seen them. Facebook Feuds. Whether we have participated or not, there is something interesting about people getting into an “internet cage match” without ever speaking face to face. When posting a seemingly controversial status update, folks who usually are lucky for a like open up a can of worms they may...

Simplify.
I’ve done it. I’ve hit adulthood, and realized that sometimes less really is more. For the majority of my adolescent/young adult life, I have spent most of my time on the go (ie: worship leading, touring, retreats, meetings, social activities, etc.). I have honestly had some of the best experiences of my life simply because I’ve been able to say YES to many things. As of late,...

My Top 10 Albums of 2010
I’ve always wanted to create a list like this, and today felt like a good day to do it. It’s always interesting to think over the years about what albums really inspired you, and how they still speak into your life during different seasons. Albums like “Beneath Medicine Tree” by Copeland reminds me of writing papers at Bible college over 6 years ago. “The Hammering...

Worship music doesn't = The Holy Spirit.
I read some great stuff in college on he topic of worship. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book on the topic, but my friend Josh just turned me onto a great worship blog by Bob Kauflin. He quotes a book that I read in college and total forgot about, but it really moved me just now. I’m sitting here eating a Panda Bowl at the Alderwood Mall, and God is ministering to my spirit....

andyhorst: I spent my evening last night at a town meeting dealing with Seattle and sex trafficking. It was a sobering and eye opening night as I learned a new face of a real tragedy that’s happening not only in my city, but across the world. It’s not the first time I’ve been made aware, but a lot more is…

"Spiritual Suplex": Authentic Relationships Are...
I think I’ll stick with the wrestling references for a bit… :) As I’ve entered full-time ministry, I’ve come to realize that it’s really easy to try and mask your true feelings for the sake of seeming put together or something. I don’t think this applies just to those in ministry, but to anyone, really. We want so badly to belong, and so we show off our...

So, I’ve been keeping this journal in a word document for over 5 years now. It’s weird looking back at the way things once were, and the things I’m processing now. Even in the midst of circumstantial change, one things remains the same; Christ at the center of everything. The following is something I wrote tonight. Mind you, when I write in my journal, my thoughts are candid,...

“If our churches don’t pray, and if people don’t have an appetite for God, what does it matter how many are attending our services? How would that impress God. Can you imagine the angels saying, “Oh, your pews! We can’t believe how beautiful they are! Up here in heaven, we’ve been talking about them for years. Your sanctuary lighting- it’s so...

April Showers.
I’m finding that life in the month of May is booking up incredibly fast. Moving into a house, fundraising for youth trips, birthday parties, fall planning, etc…it might get a little out of control. I’m just praying that God will give me a little extra grace to carry this load. However, I’m thankful for some folks who have re-entered my life and are willing to lend a hand....

Walking with a limp.
I remember being a kid and playing pretend with my friends. Most of the time, we would build couch forts and pretend we lived there, sometimes pretending we were a family of sorts. Two 7-year olds who were some how parents to a few other 7-year olds. Kinda weird! I also remember times where I’d pretend I got hurt to get out of playing with a kid I was sick of playing with. I actually remember once...

Truth I don't want to forget.
I was just thinking about the nature of God recently, and how we interpret the good and bad in our lives… Why do we give God praise for a good gift he gives us, and then curse him if things go sour? If someone were to give a child a toy they wanted for Christmas, they would likely be appreciative. If the child later decides to smash the toy on the ground, would it be the giver’s...

Awesome.
I’m typing this on my iPhone so I won’t forget. Please excuse the poor grammer and potential typos! :) Had a cool experience with a homeless guy tonight. His name was Jason. While we stood for an hour and a half outside the cheesecake factory waiting to get in, we watched a homeless guy with a big “kissing booth” sign entertaining people as they passed and trying to give...

Forgiving the Church.
“When we have been wounded by the Church, our temptation is to reject it. But when we reject the Church it becomes very hard for us to keep in touch with the living Christ. When we say, “I love Jesus, but I hate the Church,” we end up losing not only the Church but Jesus too. The challenge is to forgive the Church. This challenge is especially great because the Church seldom...

"Cliquing" in.
clique n.- A small exclusive group of friends or associates. I remember being in high school. I remember the hundreds of talks about “cliques” we’d have in youth group, and how no matter how hard our youth pastor tried there were still groups of kids who were impenetrable. They just wouldn’t include other kids. Many times, it wasn’t even an intentional act, it just...
